Glossary of Terms

Key terminology to help you understand pest management and plant health concepts.

Larvae —

The immature, wingless, feeding stage of insects that undergo complete metamorphosis. In pest management, targeting the larval stage is often more effective than treating adults.

Phosphite —

A plant-available form of phosphorus that stimulates the plant's natural immune response and strengthens vascular tissue against pathogens and environmental stress.

Pre-emergent —

A herbicide application method that prevents weed seeds from germinating, applied before weeds emerge from the soil surface for proactive control.

Compaction —

Soil condition where particles are pressed together, reducing pore space, limiting water infiltration and root growth, often caused by foot traffic or equipment.
